Purito is back, releasing a new SPF after months out of the game. As you probably remember, Purito pulled their massively popular sunscreens off the market in late 2020 as revelations about the accuracy of their SPF claims came to light. We soon learned that many Korean skincare brands were caught up in this “scandal.” (I detest that word, but what else can I call it?) The blame mostly shifted to the manufacturers of the now discontinued sunscreens (two of which were mostly responsible for all the SPF’s eventually pulled).

So here we are at the end of 2021, all a little bruised, skeptical and maybe just a little more savvy about sunscreen. Purito has decided to get back into the SPF game with the launch of their Daily Go-To Sunscreen, which will be the first of three new sunscreens.

I don’t want to spend the majority of this blog talking about the “scandal” (but a little context was necessary). If you do not trust Purito any longer, this blog will not try to persuade you otherwise. If you are cautiously optimistic, read on to learn more. Or maybe you are like me, jadedly confident that Purito has come correct with their SPF claims. The plain fact of the matter is, Purito is the brand most associated with this “scandal” and they will be the most scrutinized. I think most reviews of this sunscreen will be due to the history Purito now has with sunscreen. I believe that if the new sunscreens do not have their stated SPF, Purito will be put out of business, plain and simple. Jaded? Yes, but that’s where my feelings are at. Alright, on to the review! Ingredients:

This is a hybrid sunscreen, using both chemical and mineral filters to achieve its SPF 50+ PA++++ claims. The sunscreen has been tested both in Korea and the United States for verification and these tests are available to read on Purito’s website here.

Korean Testing: Average SPF = 57.4 PFA = 16.6
USA Testing: Average SPF = 71.4 PFA 17.9

Ingredients: Water, Butyloctyl Salicylate, Dibutyl Adipate, Propanediol, Butylene Glycol, Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Ethylhexyl Triazone, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Titanium Dioxide, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Hydrogenated Poly(C6-14 Olefin), 1,2-Hexanediol, Centella Asiatica Extract, Polyglyceryl-2 Stearate, Aluminum Hydroxide, Glyceryl Stearate, Stearyl Alcohol, Sodium Polyacrylate, Stearic Acid, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Behenyl Alcohol, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Ethylhexyl Stearate, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/​VP Copolymer, Caprylyl Glycol, Trideceth-6, Ethylhexylglycerin, Xanthan Gum, Madecassoside, Asiaticoside, Asiatic Acid, Madecassic Acid

SPF Filters are:
Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine (Tinosorb S) Covers UVA I, UVA II and UVB
Ethylhexyl Triazone (Uvinul T 150) Covers UVB
Titanium Dioxide Covers UVB and UVA II, but not as protective for UVA I
Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate (Uvinul A Plus) Covers UVA I and II

Other notables: The formula does not contain any fragrance, essential oils or forms of drying alcohol.

Texture:

It’s a creamy texture, not unlike the old Purito centella sunscreen. It spreads and absorbs easily without leaving a heavy feel on your skin. This feels mostly light and hydrating with a hint of moisture. This does however look a bit greasy! The shine factor is pretty strong on this and does not seem to settle down after application. I think this major factor will be a deal breaker for a lot of people! Even I (princess of all that is dewy) will sometimes hesitate to use this due to that shiny finish.

I did not detect a white cast with this, even on reapplication. It doesn’t pill and generally is a nice and easy texture, minus the greasy finish.

My Thoughts:

I like this sunscreen, I don’t love it. This is a sunscreen that ticks a lot of boxes for me personally, just not all of them.

The finish is really the biggest drawback. I always say there is a fine line between dewy and shiny, where you draw that line will be different. However this for me is creeping past healthy dew into shiny grease town. While the weight of this doesn’t feel heavy on my skin, it looks heavy!

Am I being too hard on this sunscreen for the finish? Absolutely. I think the finish is a healthy indicator that this sunscreen has beefed up the UV filters, unlike its Centella predecessor. (Higher amounts of UV filters in a formula will inevitably start to make the formula greasier and potentially heavier). Purito and their manufacturer have probably done a good job balancing this, but that won’t change the fact that it will be a major turn off for most people.

Otherwise, I think this is a nice sunscreen. I’ve been using it a lot lately and it’s been working well, especially now that winter is almost upon us and the shiny finish suits my now dry skin better! Since this is not water resistant I wouldn’t recommend this for heavy sun exposure, activities where you will sweat or be in or around water. This is a casual exposure, every day SPF (as the name suggests). For that purpose, I think this is a fine sunscreen suited best for those with more combination to dry skin types.

TL;DR

Non-water resistant, hybrid SPF offering decent coverage for everyday, casual sun exposure. Easy to spread and absorb. The texture feels light on the skin but leaves a shiny finish that some might find leaves them looking greasy. Best for those with combination or dry skin types, looking for a light wearing sunscreen.
