How and When to Start Your Well-Aging Skincare Routine

There are a lot of misconceptions out there about anti-aging. Some include that it’s harsh and extreme, products labeled “anti-aging” are only for dry skin, or that you have to be a certain age to start anti-aging products.

The last one is something that kind of gets on my nerves! This is a misconception that needs to be squashed, because there is nothing wrong with starting maintenance young; we only get once face!

I think there is a negative vibe associated with the word anti-aging. It seems to say, “fighting aging at all costs!” Which is why I like the Korean concept of well-aging much better. Well-aging is an all-encompassing philosophy that takes into consideration your skincare, diet, exercise and mental wellbeing so that you can age well!

Which makes a lot more sense to me, especially when it comes to the whole anti-aging topic. Because I believe two things about “anti-aging” that directly go against the “too young” for anti-aging myth.

#1. Prevention is better than treatment. Here’s the thing: it’s a lot easier to prevent a wrinkle from forming on your face than it is to treat it once it’s occurred. Once the wrinkle is there you will never be able to make it go away. Plump it, maybe, but never eliminate it.

Which is why I think it’s important to take preventative measures before you see the damage on your face.

So what age can you expect to see the damage? When should you start preventing aging?

#2. Collagen starts to decrease around age 25! That’s right, age 25! Collagen is the protein structure that is responsible for keeping skin smooth, elastic, plump and young. Along with other important properties that keep skin looking youthful, collagen production starts to slow down at 25 and will continue to decrease as you get older.

This means that around age 25 is the time to start thinking about adding anti-aging or well-aging ingredients into your routines to start preventing the visible signs of aging.

Ingredients to Start Well-Aging

There are a lot of well-known anti-aging products like retinol and chemical exfoliation that can be standouts for preventing the signs of aging, but they can be harsh on skin and not easy to add into your routine.

When you’re just starting to add in preventative products, it’s important that the products are gentle and can be used every day!

Some universal ingredients that can be easy to add into your routine include:

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is an important ingredient to look for when you are thinking about preventative measures because it can stimulate your body’s natural collagen production! Collagen is a really important property to maintain on the skin, and what better way to get more of it than from your own body?

You may be wondering if you should just add in a collagen serum? However, it’s been shown that while our bodies create collagen naturally, topically applied collagen is not accepted and used well by our skin, rendering it fairly ineffective. Sticking with ingredients that stimulate collagen give us a better chance of preventing the signs of aging.

I recommend trying:

Used Vitamin C Before: Neogen Real Vita Powder Lemon Soko Glam

Sensitive Skin: It’s Skin Power VC Effector* Amazon | Yesstyle

Jumiso All Day Vitamin Brightening and Balancing Facial Serum* Yesstyle

Antioxidants

Antioxidants help the skin repair from damage from environmental stressors. The exciting thing about anti-oxidants is that not only can they repair damage, but they can actually help prevent damage from occurring with continuous use!

Antioxidants can be found in many products including vitamin C (as if you needed another reason to add it into your routine). Special shout out to vitamin E, a fantastic anti-oxidant that, when paired with vitamin C, can actually boost the benefits of both products!

I recommend trying:

Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin E Mask* Amazon

Iunik Propolis Vitamin Synergy Propolis Serum* Amazon | Yesstyle

Peptides

Peptides are another compound that our bodies produce to create the collagen protein structure under our skin. Without the amino acids that link together to create amino peptides, we’d have no collagen to support our skin!

Needless to say, they are an important part of our skin structure and it’s not a bad idea to add them into our skincare routine!

I recommend:

Klairs Midnight Blue Youth Activating Drop* Amazon

Purito Centella Green Level Buffet Serum* Amazon

Manyo Factory 4GF Eye Cream* Amazon

Sunscreen

This is a no brainer; sunscreen is a skincare must and a well-aging essential product! Let’s be honest here, the sun will make you look old, very quickly. Not only can it contribute to uneven skin tone and sun spots, unprotected UV exposure can destroy your collagen structure!

Sunscreen fits into a well-aging routine as well, because not only does it protect the skin from the visible signs of aging, it also protects our health down the road as a preventative measure against skin cancer.

I recommend:

Chemical Filters:

Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence* SPF 50 PA++++ Yesstyle

Purito Centella Green Level Safe Sun* SPF 50 PA++++ Amazon

Mineral Filters:

Make Prem Defense Me Blu Ray Sun Cream* SPF 50 PA ++++ Amazon
